Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Sudden Cardiac Arrest/Death (SCA/SCD)  updated 01/06/03

see also summary  Skycars can help save Sudden Cardiac Arrests

Cool for 24 hours after Sudden Cardiac Arrest. added 02/20/02

Cool the brain AND supply oxygen before arriving at the hospital
Might increase survival of sudden cardiac arrest from 5% to 30%  added 11/21/01

Heart failure from use of crack may be too severe to be saved by Skyaid. added 11/20/01

Implantable pump currently can add 250 days of life to a person with a weak heart but at a cost of over $4,000 per day.{Note: Skyaid expects to add a life-year for less than $10 - which is about 10,000X less costly} It is expected that both the life extension from implantable pump will be lengthened and cost will go down with use.   added 11/13/01

greater than death by stroke, lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.

SUDDEN CARDIAC RESPONSE TIME

Yahoo/AP news  Currently 47% of all deaths from heart disease happen before person gets to the hospital.  (52% women, 42% men) This is an increase from 38% in 1989  added 02/15/02

AEDs arriving within 5-8 minutes would eliminate 2X deaths by sudden cardiac arrest.  added 02/10/02

Wall St. Journal Article Aug 3, 2001   added 08/04/01
One application of the Skyaid Watch would be to monitor hospital patients.

Likelihood of surviving SCA decreases by 10%/minute while awaiting defibrillation. added 5/13/01

Heartstream has 3 easily understood graphs of sudden cardiac arrest  added 5/13/01
    1) SCA US death rate is larger than cancer and AIDS
   2) Unlikely to survive if not defibrillated within 10 minutes
   3) SCA survival rate varies widely in the US - from 43% to less than 1%

Survival_King_County.jpg (168175 bytes) 49% survive SCD if get quick CPR and AED
This does not consider victims who were alone. 8/19/00

Should not wait more than 15 minutes before calling emergency service.
Fewer than 5% of heart attack victims are treated within the 'golden hour'
added 4/27/01

Slow helicopter service does not help with sudden cardiac arrest. added 12/28/00

Little chance of surviving sudden cardiac arrest in Ireland if >5 miles from on-duty ambulance base,
and virtually no chance if it is an on-call ambulance base.  added 12/29/00

SUDDEN CARDIAC BOOKS

Arrhythmias - 2nd edition, 2000, of 600 page book by John Kastor, M.D. This provides excellent insight into all of the different types of arrhythmias.  The book makes it clear that it will be impossible to make a Skyaid Watch with a fixed set of arrhythmia rules for everyone.  The Skyaid Watch will have to "train" itself to the wearer. added 08/25/01

Sudden Cardiac Arrest compared to Heart Attack in Healthy Heart for Dummies 8/17/00

Fighting Sudden Cardiac Death - a book 8/25/00

Two books with the same title: Sudden Cardiac Death  8/4/00
Golstein: Highest risk males have 1.3% chance of dying of Sudden Cardiac Arrest each year
SIDS deaths vary widely - primarily with latitude
Dunbar: SIDS might be able to be predicted by Heart Rate Variability analysis
Family members of heart patients rarely learn CPR

Healthy Heart for Dummies

CARDIAC RISK FACTORS

Slow recovery of heart rate after a stress test indicates 3-5% instead of normal 0.5% chance of death annually from heart disease    added 09/30/01

Stress Testing can be used to test for heart diseasePerhaps Skyaid Watch could too.  added 09/27/01

Testing of blood for sphingolipids may enable predicting  those who are10X more likely to have cardiac ischemia.  added 09/30/01

Cardiac Event risk factors in a pair of color-coded tables for
men/women, age, smoking, cholesterol, and blood pressure
from low (<5%) to very high (>40% chance of event in 10 years)
Based on the long-term Framingham Heart survey. 8/25/00

Risks associated with SCA, Heart Attack, and Stroke

Chance of Sudden Cardiac Death and Genes
SCD rate increases by 2X if father had SCD, and by 9X if both parents had SCD.  added 06/01/01

Risk Factors for Sudden Death  two Dec 1999 papers  8/4/00
One paper focused on the factors for ages ranging from 20 to 59
Other paper concluded that SCA 7x higher if coronary patient was exhausted and could not express his emotions

Risk factor: Anger:
A study reported in NY Times May 9, 2000 that looked at almost 13,000 people
found that those who were most prone to anger were about 2.5 times as likely
to have heart attacks or sudden cardiac deaths.  7/27/00

Heart disease risk assessment interactive test at U.S. News  added 07/06/01

Risk Factor Family, Smoke:
Likelihood of having a SCA increases 50% (to 1.5 per 10,000) if family has had history of SCA,
but by 500% if the person is a current smoker (to 5 per 10,000 per year) Jan 1998 Circulation  7/26/00

Diabetes article from U.S. News

3D Biphasic AED Technology
Has much better recovery rates by reversing the current flow,
compensating for the body impedance, and
allowing the energy increments to be increased.

WHEN AND WHERE HEART ATTACKS OCCUR

Investigating Chest Pain Only about 15% of patients admitted to the hospital to undergo testing to
rule out myocardial infarction will have had one"  from Emergency Medicine Magazine   added 08/28/01

AED LOCATIONS

Some people are buying $3,000 AED for use at home.
from USA Today Oct 24, 2000
    added 2/01/01
Note: Skyaid service will provide more protection at a small fraction of the cost of an AED:
  1) Cardiac arrest can occur anywhere
  2) Cardiac arrest can occur while asleep
  3) Victim can be alone
  4) Heart Attacks (not just sudden cardiac arrests)
  5) Stroke disability greatly reduced
(strokes occur about 3X more often than cardiac arrests)
  6) Medical help arrives to provide essential treatment
  7) Victim quickly brought to appropriate critical care center

Realizes that it is difficult to deliver AEDs quickly enough when there is slow traffic.

Sudden Cardiovascular Death from Ben Best   7/26/00
- was possibly the cause of 18% of the Framingham study deaths.
- 60% of the SCD has not prior evidence of coronary artery disease. .
- 75-90% of patents experiencing SCD were in ventricular fibrillation,
- Myocardial infarction is the trigger in less that 20% of SCD,
- Psychological stress can be a factor in SCD.
- Risk of SCD increase 70% from 7AM to 9AM for all people over 65.
- Diabetics have a high rate of SCD.
- Risk factors for coronary heart diseases and SCD are the same:
smoking (3X) , hypertension (3X),  and high blood cholesterol (2X),
Person with two risk factors increases SCD by 4.5X, with 3 factors the increase is 8.5X.
- Being overweight increases likelihood of SCD by 2X .
