".. the prevalence of chronic disability had steadily declined over the past 20 years.
And it seems that beyond a certain age, growing older actually cuts per-capita annual {medical} costs.
Medicare expenditures during the last year of life, which always accounts for a disproportionately large percentage of total adult medical expenses, average $15,500 for those ages 65 to 74 while people 80 to 84 consume only $13,000, and those more than 90, less than $9,000.
This trend is attributed both to the elderly dying more abruptly once they start to go and a reluctance to employ extreme and costly treatment on the very old."
