Maintenance Free Operating Period = MFOP

The MFOP concept was pioneered by Airbus for commercial aircraft is being carried over into military programs.

"The fundamental goal of MFOP is to make virtually all maintenance scheduled by transferring what would currently be unscheduled maintenance into a predicted maintenance slot"

"The MFOP is a period of time during which there is not need for scheduled or unscheduled maintenance"

"It is not necessarily a fault-free period - systems element faults may happen, but, as a result of the inherent design of the system, the aircraft continues its operation uninterrupted"  in Interavia March 2000, article entitled The pros and cons of convergence, page 30

It is very simple for the Skycar to be designed for a Maintenance Free Operating Period.  I was planning that the Skycar would have sufficient built-in redundancy for MFOP.  All that needs to be done is 1) design the maintenance system to wait for scheduled maintenance, rather than trying to fix each fault as it occurs, 2) Get FAA approval to design the system to take-off with known faults - but with sufficient reserve redundancy.
