A
plane in every garage? added
10/09/00 If you've never considered the words "personal" and "aircraft" together, think again. Engineer Paul Moller is banking on the chance his Skycar will literally fly out of dealerships in the near future. Moller, 63, has spent nearly 40 years developing a vertical-takeoff and -landing vehicle that flies at 350 mph (three times the top speed of a helicopter) and gets about 20 miles per gallon. With a sticker price near that of a luxury automobile — $60,000 — the Skycar is Moller's answer to overcrowded freeways near his home in southern California. Moller hopes to test-fly the Skycar by year's end and start production in 2001.
