www.SmartbusinessMag.com Oct 2001 Toward the end of the year, if all goes as planned, Paul Moller (pictured, left) will hold an international press conference wherein his company (www.moller.com) will demonstrate the Moller M400 Skycar, a personal "vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle" or volantor. Why do we need airborne commuters traveling at 390 mph? "Today I guess it's pretty obvious," says Moller, in reference to California gridlock. "I dread the thought of going to San Francisco, (The traffic} is truly an ordeal. If Moller gets FAA approval, there's still the air traffic control system to worry about, but Moller remains un daunted. "It would not be difficult to accommodate our kind of machine in a purely automated world where you're no longer a pilot," he says. "That's really the only way this would ever work in large numbers — the human has got to be out of the loop." When will the first
dealership break ground? According to Moller, "Daniel Goldin, the head of
NASA, suggested that this type of transportation could be in the hands of the
American population within 10 years—and 90 percent of the population within 25
years." Watch out for falling cigarette butts. |
